Entering Items for Live Bidding

For entering items that will be sold by an auctioneer with live bidding.

Note:  The Live item type cannot be offered in an online auction.  If you would like to allow pre-bidding on live items prior to your gala, edit the item to type = Silent and mark the item as for sale in both the gala and online venues.   After the online bidding closes, edit the item again to remove the online venue and change the type back to Live.

Note: This article focuses on elements unique to Live items. For info on how each field/component on the Item detail form is used, see Entering an Item for Silent Bidding.

To enter a live item:

Go to Catalog > Add an Item

1.  Note:  If you intend to double-sell the item*, you'll need to edit the quantity to 2 in order to sell to the second bidder.  Be aware that the quantity is displayed on the web catalog so you may want to edit the quantity just prior to your event.

2.  Live type generates printed Description sheets, but not bid sheets.

3.  Note:  The Live item type cannot be offered in an online auction.  If you would like to allow pre-bidding on live items prior to your gala, edit the item to type = Silent and mark the item as for sale in both the gala and online venues.   After the online bidding closes, edit the item again to remove th online venue and change the type back to Live.

4.  A FMV of $0 declares that the winner receives no consideration for their payment.   If the winner receives any marketable benefits from the item (such as complimentary admission to a paid event, complimentary lunch as Principal for a Day etc) it should be reflected in the FMV.

* Double-selling is when the auctioneer will conduct bidding as high as possible with the final two bidders, then ask both bidders to buy at that price if  the donor will "agree" to donate another.    For instance, two bidders remain and the last bid was $1200. The high bidder appears to have reached their "limit".  Instead of asking the other bidder to raise it to $1300 - the auctioneer would offer to sell one to both bidders for $1200 each.   A good auctioneer will make this look like a spontaneous idea - but it has usually been pre-authorized by the donor (and the auctioneer is aware of items that can be double-sold.)
